As the days get shorter and the weather turns colder, it’s the perfect time to give your septic tank or sewage treatment plant a little extra attention. A bit of proactive care now can prevent costly and inconvenient problems when the winter weather really sets in.
Here are our top tips to make sure your system is ready for the season ahead.
Give Your System a Quick Check
Take a minute to walk around your system and conduct a quick inspection. This simple habit can help you spot early warning signs of a potential issue.
- Does the air blower sound normal?
- Are there any unusual or unpleasant smells?
- Do you see any wet patches or unusually lush green grass over your drainage field?
Catching a small problem now can save you from a major headache later. Your system has a normal ‘baseline,’ and noticing any changes early on is key to maintaining it.
Mind What You Flush
This is the most common cause of blockages and system failure. Remember the “3 Ps” rule: pee, poo, and paper. Everything else belongs in the bin.
Items like wet wipes (even those marketed as “flushable”), sanitary products, and kitchen fats or oils don’t break down properly. They can build up in your tank or pipes, causing nasty and expensive blockages that could lead to a complete system backup.
Review Your Service Report
Make sure your system is up to date with its recommended emptying schedule. A full tank can become a huge problem, especially with increased rainfall and ground saturation. Check your last service report for the recommended emptying date. If you’re unsure or need a professional recommendation, don’t hesitate to give the WCI Service team a call, we are here to help!
Schedule Your Annual Service
If you haven’t had your annual check-up yet, autumn is the perfect time. Our professional service engineers are trained to spot minor issues – like a worn part or a potential blockage – long before they turn into a major, costly problem. A regular service can extend the life of your system and give you peace of mind all winter long.
