Rectifying a Neglected Tricel Sewage Treatment Plant in Devon
The new owners of a Devon property inherited a severely neglected sewage treatment plant discharging at over 50 mg/l ammonia. WCI Service Engineers rectified it – avoiding a costly full replacement.
Summary
- Ammonia at discharge: over 50 mg/l before rectification, 3.6 mg/l after
- Confined spaces entry carried out by 2 British Water accredited engineers
- Follow-up visit at two months confirmed sustained compliance

Overview
The new owners of a four-bedroom property in rural Devon suspected something was wrong with their sewage treatment plant. Our first service visit confirmed it – the Tricel system had not been properly maintained in years and was failing across every major component.
The Challenge
Ammonia at the discharge point was above 50 mg/l. The filter media had been dislodged by sludge build-up, the airline had detached from the diffuser, the sludge return was broken and aeration was minimal. Paint introduced into the system had caused progressive failure throughout.
The WCI Solution
Our engineers believed the plant was salvageable. Working under confined spaces entry protocols, the media was removed and solids cleared. The tank was jetted and cleaned, a new diffuser fitted, new airlines installed, and a Tricel media bundle and sludge return line reinstated to manufacturer specification.
The Outcome
At a two-month follow-up visit, ammonia had dropped to 3.6 mg/l – a clear, compliant discharge. The plant was enrolled in a WCI annual service contract. Rectification saved the cost of full replacement and extended the life of a structurally sound system.

Just a brilliant company to deal with from start to finish and even beyond that. Experts in a technical field who are also human are a rarity. Highly recommend them.
