Long-Term Service Partnership with a Devon Residential Care Home

Overview

Coombeshead House provides high-quality residential care for people over 65 in the Devon countryside. WCI Service Engineers installed the WPL HiPAF sewage treatment plant in 2016 and has serviced it ever since.

The Challenge

A care home faces specific compliance challenges: high volumes of fats, oils and greases from the kitchen, non-flushable materials from bathrooms, and the need for a consistent desludging schedule. Three compliance issues emerged over the years that required our attention.

The WCI Solution

Each issue was identified and resolved through the routine service process. FOG contamination was addressed via a grease trap on kitchen drains, supported by improved kitchen hygiene practices. Non-flushable materials were tackled with staff training and signage. A TSS compliance issue was traced to a clerical error in the emptying schedule – once reinstated, effluent quality returned to permit standard. In each case, early detection through regular servicing prevented a minor issue becoming a regulatory problem.

The Outcome

The system continues to operate in full compliance with its Environment Agency permit discharge standards. Full records are maintained for a minimum of five years.
