CCTV Survey Reveals Wrong Drainage Route – Saving Cost Before Design Committed

Before committing to a drainage design for a new building at Grade II listed period property, the architects asked WCI to verify the drainage layout. The assumed drainage route turned out to be entirely wrong.

Taunton, Somerset

Summary

  • Assumed drainage direction was entirely incorrect - discovered by CCTV and dye testing
  • Significantly shorter drainage route identified for the new building
  • Pitch fibre pipework in poor condition identified - lining or replacement recommended

Overview

When Jonathan Rhind Architects needed to confirm the drainage layout at a Grade II listed period property before committing to a design for a new building, WCI attended with a CCTV surveyor and laser level. The findings changed the design entirely – and avoided a costly mistake.

The Challenge

The project team assumed the main foul chamber discharged northward to the combined sewer in the road. WCI’s investigation revealed it discharged in the opposite direction, to a rear garden chamber. An architect-suggested alternative route to the northwest was also assessed and rejected due to tree roots and connection costs.

The WCI Solution

WCI Water & Wastewater Engineers carried out a full Connectivity and Condition CCTV survey, precision laser site levels, dye testing to confirm drainage flow directions, and minor excavation to locate partially buried manholes. The correct drainage route was confirmed and a significantly shorter, less disruptive routing for the new building was identified.

The Outcome

The project team had accurate drainage information before design was committed – avoiding a strategy built on incorrect assumptions, and identifying a better, shorter drainage route in the process.
