WCI Consulting Engineers designed the sustainable drainage strategy for Mayday Saxonvale – 182 homes and community facilities in Frome. The Lead Local Flood Authority called it one of the best they had seen.

Overview
Mayday Saxonvale is a community-supported regeneration scheme for the Saxonvale site in Frome, incorporating 182 homes, a hotel, spa, lido, music venue and a new footbridge over the River Frome. WCI Consulting Engineers provided the sustainable drainage strategy.
The Challenge
The scheme required a SuDS strategy that could handle a high-density mixed-use development while minimising below-ground attenuation. A single discharge point fed a high-gradient stream running through a school in the valley below, making careful flow and water quality management essential.
The WCI Solution
WCI designed a source control-led SuDS strategy, managing more than 75% of the site’s attenuation through distributed surface measures rather than tanks. The scheme was also used, with Environment Agency support, for water quality management and attenuation of the weekly drain-down of 46 hot tubs.
The Outcome
The Lead Local Flood Authority praised the approach. Planning board approval was granted for the scheme.
