Reed Bed Drainage System for a Further Education College in Dorset

Philip Green Memorial School needed its historic combined drainage separated and replaced with a compliant reed bed system. WCI Consulting Engineers designed and installed a two-phase solution around the college calendar.

Cranbourne, Dorset

Summary

  • 2 × 265m² horizontal flow reed beds planted with Phragmites australis
  • 2-phase installation - both phases carried out during school holidays
  • EA environmental permit secured for seasonal discharge to ground

Overview

Philip Green Memorial School, a further education college supporting young people with special needs, needed its historic combined drainage upgraded. WCI Consulting Engineers separated foul from surface water, installed a new reed bed system and secured an EA environmental permit.

The Challenge

The site’s historic drainage was a combined foul and surface water system discharging via a goyle in the wooded grounds. The works needed to be phased across school holiday periods to ensure zero disruption to the college’s operations.

The WCI Solution

WCI installed a two-stage primary tank with gravity discharge to two 265m² horizontal flow reed beds, fenced to protect during establishment. Works were phased across two school holiday periods. The goyle was cleared and repurposed for surface water attenuation. The college grounds maintenance team was trained by WCI to manage the system independently.

The Outcome

The college has a fully compliant and sustainable foul drainage system. The grounds team manages day-to-day maintenance with ongoing WCI technical support available.
