SuDS Drainage Strategy for an Industrial Development in Flood Risk Zone 2

Twelve new industrial units near Wells came with a detailed SuDS planning condition in Flood Risk Zone 2. WCI Consulting Engineers designed a compliant below-ground attenuation scheme with full greenfield runoff calculations.

Overview

Planning approval for twelve new light industrial units near Wells came with a detailed condition requiring a sustainable drainage scheme based on SuDS principles. The site’s Flood Risk Zone 2 classification demanded rigorous design and careful coordination with the sewerage undertaker.

The Challenge

The planning condition required no flooding in a 1:30 year storm, no property damage in a 1:100 year storm with 40% climate change allowance, and greenfield runoff rates to be maintained. Available discharge routes and existing infrastructure capacity were unclear at the outset.

The WCI Solution

WCI confirmed design parameters, calculated greenfield runoff rates and designed a below-ground attenuation scheme with controlled discharge. Pipe sizing, manhole schedules and long-sections were prepared alongside a full maintenance and management plan for submission with the planning application.

The Outcome

A compliant SuDS scheme was delivered for planning submission, discharging the planning condition.
