Overview

Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset treats over 5,500 animals a year with more than 600 volunteers and regular public open days. When the Environment Agency issued an enforcement notice against their failing sewage plant, WCI resolved the situation without interrupting a single day of animal care.

The Challenge

The failing plant was polluting and subject to EA enforcement. The site combines Grade II listed building restrictions, unstable ground, high visitor footfall and the absolute requirement to maintain all animal care operations continuously.

The WCI Solution

WCI secured a full EA environmental permit and new discharge consent, then installed a Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) plant – specifically selected for variable flows and operation by non-specialist staff. Zero disruption to animal care was maintained throughout. Site reinstatement included a wildflower meadow for biodiversity benefit.

The Outcome

100% compliant. Pollution ended. A future-proof system that Secret World’s staff can operate with confidence.
