Reed Bed Design for Longleat House Wildlife Park Visitor Facilities
WCI Water & Wastewater Engineers installed a new reed bed system for Longleat House Wildlife Park after the original willow bed had failed – with effluent migrating towards a nearby watercourse.
Summary
- Design and supervision basis - cost-managed to protect the visitor site budget
- EA permit for watercourse discharge specified and applied for
Overview
WCI Water & Wastewater Engineers installed a new reed bed system that was designed by WCI Consulting Engineers for the visitor toilet facilities at Longleat House Wildlife Park, after the original willow bed had matured to trees and failed – with effluent beginning to migrate towards a nearby watercourse.
The Challenge
The maturing willows had rendered the existing treatment ineffective. A new system was needed within the available land area that would meet EA permit conditions and could be built by the client’s groundworkers under WCI supervision.
The WCI Solution
WCI Consulting Engineers designed the reed bed on a design-and-supervise basis, establishing flow rates for correct sizing, and producing a bill of materials and method statement to enable the client’s own team to undertake construction.
The Outcome
The grounds team at Longleat manages day-to-day maintenance with ongoing WCI technical support available, most recently returning for a full Asset Audit.
