Site Supervisor

Overview

Salary: £32k to £45k (DOE)

Location: Wiveliscombe, Somerset (On-site)

Contract: Full time, Full Time, Monday to Friday, 7:30am–5pm.

Role Summary

WCI’s Construction Division is growing, and we’re creating a new Site Supervisor role to oversee groundworks and civil engineering projects across several sites at once.

Reporting to our Operations Manager, you’ll manage our sub-contractors and their working foremen, and be accountable on site for health and safety, quality, programme and cost.

Our Project Engineers win, design and price the work and look after the client; your job is to make sure it’s built safely, right first time, on programme and on budget. It’s mainly a supervisory role, but you’ll be happy to jump on a digger or dumper when it keeps the job moving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and enforce WCI’s safe systems of work across all your sites, fulfilling site supervision duties under CDM 2015
  • Review sub-contractor RAMS before work starts, and deliver site inductions, daily briefings and toolbox talks
  • Carry out and record site inspections, covering excavations, temporary works, plant, lifting operations and permits
  • Stop unsafe work, and report and investigate accidents, incidents and near misses with the Operations Manager
  • Direct and coordinate sub-contractors and their working foremen, check competency cards, plant certification and insurances, and feed back on their performance
  • Plan and sequence labour, plant and materials to deliver the programme agreed with the Project Engineer, taking early action to recover delays
  • Coordinate deliveries, plant hire, waste removal and third-party attendance such as water company inspections, Building Control and Highways
  • Make sure work is built to drawings, specifications and regulations, including Building Regulations Part H, water company Design & Construction Guidance and NRSWA
  • Complete ITPs, test records (such as air and water tests and CCTV surveys), photographs and as-builts for the QA file, and close out snagging before handover
  • Control plant hire, materials and waste to deliver within budget, record daywork and variations promptly, and verify sub-contractor timesheets and applications
  • Resolve day-to-day site issues such as ground conditions, buried services, access and weather, escalating design and commercial matters to the Project Engineer
  • Represent WCI professionally with clients, residents and neighbours
  • Implement pollution prevention and spoil and waste management, protecting watercourses, drainage and ecology
  • Keep daily site diaries, inspection registers and progress photographs, and report weekly to the Operations Manager and Project Engineers
  • Operate excavators and dumpers when needed, and drive the company transit tipper between sites
  • Coach and mentor WCI operatives and trainees on site

Training

We pay for your training and ticket renewals, including SSSTS/SMSTS, CSCS and CPCS/NPORS, so your qualifications stay current.

You’ll also have access to ongoing training, development and upskilling opportunities throughout your time with us.

About You

This role suits an experienced groundworks or civils supervisor who is used to keeping more than one site moving at a time.

Safety comes first: you set the standard on site and won’t hesitate to stop the job when something isn’t right. You’ll be firm, fair and clear with sub-contractors, professional with clients and the public, and confident solving problems on the ground while knowing when to escalate.

Commercial awareness matters too, from controlling plant and materials to capturing every variation. So does the discipline to keep good site records and pride in work that’s built right first time.

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Current SSSTS or SMSTS
  • Valid CSCS card (Gold Supervisor or Black Manager card preferred)
  • Proven experience supervising groundworks and civils, including drainage, foundations, earthworks and external works
  • Experience managing sub-contractors and gangs across more than one site at a time
  • Able to read drawings and specifications, and check levels and setting out (for example with a laser level)
  • Sound working knowledge of CDM 2015, excavation safety, temporary works and service avoidance (CAT and Genny)
  • Computer literate, including email, site reporting apps, Word and Excel

Other candidate requirements

  • Full UK driving licence (Category B) and able to drive the company transit tipper
  • Must meet the criteria of WCI’s motor insurer to drive company vehicles
  • Based within commuting distance of our Wiveliscombe office (TA4 2PW)
  • Willing to travel between sites daily

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • CPCS or NPORS tickets for 360 excavator (such as CPCS A58/A59) and forward tipping dumper (such as CPCS A09 or NPORS N204)
  • SMSTS, where SSSTS is held
  • NVQ Level 3 or above in Occupational Work Supervision or Construction Site Supervision
  • Experience of drainage, sewage treatment plants, pumping stations or water and wastewater infrastructure
  • NRSWA Supervisor, First Aid at Work or Temporary Works Supervisor
  • Trailer towing entitlement (B+E) for moving small plant

Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary of £32,000 to £45,000, depending on experience.

Working hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30am–5pm.

The role is based across multiple sites, with office attendance in Wiveliscombe as required.

Holiday is 22 days plus 8 bank holidays. The company closes over the Christmas period, and those days come out of the 22-day allowance.

For the job itself, you’ll be provided with a company transit tipper and fuel card, a mobile phone, PPE and workwear.

WCI also offers a well-rounded benefits package after probation, including:

  • Health and wellbeing support through a paid health cash plan
  • Life cover, providing financial security for your family
  • Employer pension contributions
  • Flexible holiday trading options
  • Eligibility for an annual performance bonus
  • Ongoing training, development and upskilling opportunities

If you’re a practical problem-solver who takes pride in quality work and wants to be part of a growing, values-led business, we’d love to hear from you.
