The Future of Nutrient Neutrality

The Government has announced plans to scrap nutrient neutrality requirements for new housing developments (find out more here).

The Government’s proposal to eliminate nutrient neutrality requirements for new housing projects has stirred up a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty.  The fate of this change hinges on the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill’s passage through the House of Lords.  Even if approved, its practical execution across Local Planning Authorities will demand time.

Our advice to our clients is to pursue approval for your development while staying attuned to the potential shifts in regulation.

We recommend that clients continue to work with us on preparing nutrient neutrality assessments and mitigation strategies (NNAMS) and to get well prepared planning applications submitted.  Where appropriate, our Phosphate Credit Scheme continues to provide clients with the opportunity to mitigate their phosphate balance via an efficient and affordable scheme.

Gaining planning approval while the Government attempts to amend the nutrient neutrality requirements will only mean you can get on with building without the risk of endless delays.  If the nutrient neutrality requirements are scrapped before approval, you’ll be ahead of the curve.
