SECRET WORLD

Secret World is a 24/7, 365 days a year wildlife rescue centre, caring for over 5,500 sick, injured and orphaned animals each year. Secret World is supported by a team of over 600 dedicated volunteers who assist in all sorts of ways. As part of the events at Secret World the charity open their doors to the public for open days and run educational courses throughout the year.

Secret World had a need to upgrade its commercial sewage treatment system in order to keep pace with the increased foul flow at its centre. The existing system was polluting and the Environment Agency were asking for a solution.

WCI was made aware that the new system would need to be able to treat wastewater from a daily volunteer task force, intermingled with popular open days and educational courses. To add to the complication of the site the ground was reported to be poor and excavations did not hold up. WCI liaised with the EA and applied (and were granted) a new EA permit. Three different sewage treatment plants were assessed for the site with a submerged aerated filter being installed for its simplicity and low cost. Reinstatement following installation included wild flower and native grass seeding to compliment the opening of the Heritage Lottery Funded newly converted grade ll listed barn which will be used to support the extensive learning programme at Secret World.
