Upgrading an outdated STP to offset phosphates in the River Parrett catchment

We were approached by Service Clients who own a 5-bedroom detached house, located in the River Parrett catchment and wishing to take advantage of a free sewage treatment plant upgrade as part of our ongoing phosphate mitigation scheme. The property, which was once used for bed and breakfast accommodation, was being served by an aged and increasingly problematic 12-person VSM sewage treatment plant installed by WCI over three decades ago. With the bed and breakfast a distant memory, the owners no longer required such a large treatment plant and sought a more appropriate solution.

After the usual checks to confirm eligibility under the scheme, our project engineer visited the property to evaluate the existing drainage system, the access routes, and to determine the best installation method. A GRAF 7-person one2clean package treatment plant was selected as a more efficient, modern alternative to the existing system.

Access to the garden was going to be tricky and would require use of ground protection boards to ensure we did not make a mess of the restricted area. These were most definitely required as the installation was scheduled for what turned out to be one of the rainiest weeks of the year!

Before excavation work could begin there was the small matter of removing 100 patio slabs and some raised flower beds! Once the site was cleared our team installed the new one2clean tank and the original VSM sewage treatment plant was decommissioned and backfilled.

Once the installation was complete, the new sewage treatment plant was commissioned by a WCI British Water Accredited and GRAF Trained Service Engineer and we set about reinstating the garden so the paths could be re-laid, and the greenhouse reduced in size and rebuilt.

Naomi revisited the property a few weeks later to hand over the cash incentive, part of our scheme to reward homeowners for their participation in phosphate mitigation efforts. The new GRAF one2clean system was performing well and the owners were delighted with their upgrade. The new system not only meets the property’s current needs, is aesthetically more appealing and has paved the way for a garden ‘do over’ BUT also contributes to environmental betterment by reducing the property’s phosphate output by 1.01kg TP/year.

The owner left WCI a glowing review (and shared her amazing flapjack recipe!).

“We have recently had installed a replacement sewage treatment plant as part of The Free Septic Tank upgrade scheme (Upgrade Phosphate Scheme).
From the time of submitting our application to the completion of the installation, just two weeks ago by WCI, the organisation, timing and execution of the work was exemplary!
Firstly Phil organised a site visit, surveyed the area to be used and explained to us the way forward. A few weeks later Ben and Jason carried out the ground works and decommissioned the old plant and installed the new system. No matter any obstacles along the way they remained cheerful and polite at all times. Even on the 3rd and 4th day when the rain didn’t stop they continued working to complete the task on time.
We have been clients of WCI for almost twenty years and have always found them extremely
reliable and quick to respond to any request.
We would like to thank all the team at WCI for being so efficient and professional. We have no hesitation in recommending them to future clients.”
